The need for fully trained, professional computer service technicians who are able to configure, support, and troubleshoot today's complex PC-based operating systems with confidence and expertise is growing quickly. This need is being driven by the rapid evolution in the power and complexity of PC hardware and software applications, as well as by the increased push from stand-alone PCs to highly-integrated networks.

Demand for computer service technicians will increase as the use of computer equipment increases-businesses throughout the economy are expected to continue automating in search of greater productivity and improved service. The development of new computer applications and lower computer prices will also stimulate demand. More technicians will be needed to install, maintain, and repair these machines.

The need for computer repair continues to be an ongoing problem that many users face even within the first month of ownership. A survey of over 48,000 ConsumerReports.org subscribers found that 2 percent of them bought PCs that became completely inoperable in the first month; that another 6 percent had serious problems in the first month but the PCs were usable; and that over the past four years, 27 percent of PCs have needed repair. The chart below shows the percentage that ever had a repair to original components.

The demand for computer support among computer users continues to increase each year. This is reflected in the number of technical support calls computer makers receive each year. According to the Service and Support Professionals Association, since 2003, the number of support requests among computer makers has increased 11 percent, with the largest companies fielding between one and two million requests each month.

Unfortunately, the technical support provided by computer manufacturers is not meeting the expectations of computer users. A survey by PC Magazine found that satisfaction with tech support and repairs lags far behind satisfaction with desktops and notebooks themselves. The results are illustrated below.

Business requiring computer support specialists and systems administrators range from startup companies to established industry leaders. The continued development of the Internet, telecommunications, and e-mail has industries not typically associated with computers-such as construction-increasingly needing computer specialists. Small and large firms across all industries are expanding or developing computer systems, creating an immediate need for computer support specialists and systems administrators.

While fixing computers is the most frequent kind of work a technician gets, they're also called for other tasks that are sometimes overwhelming for the average user, including setting up a new computer, transferring data from an old computer to a new one, or installing a wireless network for two or more computers in the same house.

Growth in the industry is often dependent upon external trends and events, such as new software releases and technological change. New mobile technologies, such as the wireless Internet, will also continue to create a demand as people scramble to learn how to use these technologies. Additionally, businesses and individuals alike seek help in managing, upgrading, and customizing ever more complex computer systems.
